How to Brighten Your Smile with Coconut Oil

To have a mouth full of white and healthy looking teeth is a must for a beautiful bright smile. Report says Americans spend over a billion dollar on OTC teeth whitening, not counting at-home recipes. Meanwhile, the trend of trying DIY alternatives to restore natural whiteness in our teeth is picking up. One of the most acclaimed is coconut oil pulling.

Why Coconut Oil?

With naturally antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory properties, coconut oil clings to the biofilm or plaque on the teeth and when spat out, the bacteria in the mouth are eliminated. Rich in medium chain triglycerides and high in lauric acid, coconut oil is powerful in killing Streptococcus mutans bacteria that causes cavity. That’s why it’s prominent in inhibiting and curing dental caries, tooth decay and gum disease. In the long run, coconut oil pulling will benefit us with whitened teeth, fresher breath, and clearer mind and skin.

How to Use Coconut Oil for Oil Pulling?

For those who have never heard of oil pulling, it might sound like a tricky task given its impressive health benefits, but the process itself is quite simple. You’ll need to buy an organic coconut oil. Scoop about 1-2 teaspoons into your mouth and swish for 20 minutes. For a more pleasant experience and nicer smell, you can pour a few drops of brushing blend or essential oil (make sure the essential oil is safe to use in the mouth). After swishing, spit into a trash can not the sink since the oil solidifies at certain temperature that may clog your pipes. Do not swallow as it is loaded with bacteria and plague. Thoroughly rinse your mouth with warm water and properly brush your teeth to remove excess oil and remaining bacteria.

What if 20 Minutes is Too Much to Handle?

20 minutes oil swishing might seem impossible at the start, but there are alternatives for those who cannot do the 20 minute process. You can either spit out a tiny bit every 5 minutes to make it easier to hang on or you can split your swishing into two separate 10 minute sessions in the morning and evening. Do it in the shower or something that attracts your attention for 20 minutes, such as watching your favorite TV shows.

How Often Should I Oil Pull?
Preferably 3 - 4 days a week.

Coconut Oil Pulling Cautions

Remember to include oil pulling as a part of oral health regimen but not in place of oral hygiene routine. In case of any abnormal topical or internal reactions, stop coconut oil pulling right away and check with a dentist before using again.
