How to Repel Mosquitoes Naturally This Summer

What always happens when we spend time outdoors in the summer? Well aside from lots of fun and memories to last a lifetime, if you spend enough time outside in the coming months you’re likely to be bitten by mosquitoes - tiny creatures that inspire more dread than cold showers, public speaking, and bad first dates combined. Thankfully there is a natural DIY method to repel these foul flying demons this summer.

But if you’re wondering why we need a natural DIY method when we can just go to the shop and buy an instant repellent, well I would say you are a spoilsport. More seriously, I would say a DIY remedy is needed as our homemade counterparts do not have DEET.

DEET (or N, N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide) is a widely used ingredient in over-the-counter insect repellents. Whilst approved for use by the EPA, it can also cause soreness, rashes, and blistering, as well as irritating the eyes if applied incorrectly. DEET has also been linked to some neurological effects. Currently there are 18 known case of children having had an adverse neurological reaction and 2 adult deaths associated with DEET.

Boy oh boy, maybe a treatment you make at home isn’t too bad after all.

Besides, making your own repellent is incredibly easy, doesn’t cost much, will limit the amount of chemicals you expose to your body (or your child’s), and you can feel secure knowing that your skin won’t break out into hot blisters or itchy rashes.

The secret ingredient for making a natural guard against these winged bloodsuckers is essential oils. For a quick primer on essential oils, they are the aromatic compounds in plants that have then been extracted and turned into a liquid. Essential oils literally contain the essence of the plant – which means they contain all the health or medicinal qualities found in the plant.

For repelling mosquitoes, the best and most effective essential oils are:

·         Basil

·         Cinnamon

·         Citronella

·         Clove

·         Eucalyptus

·         Geranium

·         Lavender

·         Lemon

·         Peppermint

·         Rosemary

·         Sage

·         Thyme

In addition to using an essential oil, you will need either distilled or boiled water, and witch hazel or vodka to make your natural repellent.

Follow the steps below to make your own:

1.      Add 2 ounces of distilled or boiled water.

2.      Add 1.5 ounces of witch hazel or vodka.

3.      Add 30-50 drops of the essential oil of choice. You can add more oils for a stronger spray but you might need to adjust the amount of drops used if the potency is too strong.

4.      Shake or swirl to mix.

5.      Apply on your skin.

There you have it. It’s as simple as that. So this summer when you or your family are out playing, apply a natural mosquito repellent and enjoy peace of mind and peace of body.
