How to Make Your Own Toothpaste with Coconut Oil

Why make your own toothpaste when you can just buy branded ones from the shop? Just pick up your favorite brand of toothpaste and glance through its ingredients list. You will certainly find a few of the following ingredients.

Ÿ   Triclosan: A pesticide and hormone disruptor.

Ÿ   Sweeteners: Sorbitol, sodium saccharin and other artificial sweeteners are often used in toothpaste to improve taste

Ÿ   Fluoride: Which is toxic and can be dangerous if swallowed

Ÿ   Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS): Gives toothpaste its foam and lather. Some research shows that SLS can cause mouth ulcers and canker sores.

Ÿ   Glycerin: A sweet, colorless liquid which is supposed to coat teeth, but its effect is still debated

There are other highly abrasive ingredients, which damage enamel, making teeth sensitive and more prone to gum recession and cavities.

The alternative? Make your own toothpaste and decide what goes inside your mouth. Homemade toothpaste has become an increasingly popular alternative to off-the-shelf toothpaste. It is not only easy to make, but also let you be conscious about things associated with your health every day.

While commercial toothpaste contains more than a dozen of ingredients, homemade toothpaste can be made from as few as 4 easily available, natural ingredients. The key ingredients are coconut oil and baking soda. Baking soda helps to neutralize acid that attacks our teeth, and coconut oil provides many health benefits including killing microorganisms with its fatty acid. For a peppermint flavored toothpaste, you need:

Ÿ   About 1/2 cup coconut oil

Ÿ   2-3 Tablespoons of baking soda

Ÿ   2 small packets of stevia powder

Ÿ   15-20 drops of peppermint essential oil

All the ingredients are available from the supermarket. Or you can buy them online. For 100% pure, natural coconut oil and peppermint essential oil, look for Anjou Coconut Oil and Anjou Peppermint Essential Oil from Amazon.

Once you have collected all the ingredients:

1.         Melt the coconut oil.

2.         Mix in other ingredients and stir well.

3.         Put mixture into small glass jar

4.         Let cool completely.

To use your homemade toothpaste, dip a toothbrush in and scrape small amount onto bristles.

Each essential oil comes with its unique aroma and benefits. Feel free to swap the essential oil with your choice of flavor. Because toothpaste is something we use multiple times every day, it can have a tremendous effect on not just your teeth, but your overall health as well.
