Aromatherapy is a great way to increase both your physical and mental health, especially when you’re feeling down. But did you know that it can be used for, and benefit, babies too? Before you do though, check inside and find out how to do it SAFELY.
Step 1: Check Your Essential Oil
First, and most importantly, check the label of your essential oil and make sure it’s 100% pure and organic. The reason you want to do so is not just a matter of effectiveness – pure essential oils are made using only plant extracts and do not contain any artificial properties that may contain harmful effects. Adults are one thing, but your not-as-strong baby, you definitely want to go with natural and organic… just think of it like your baby is smelling a flower!
For your choice of essential oil, we recommend the Anjou 100% Pure Essential Oil Premium Kit for Aromatherapy, which comes in 6 different flavors: Lavender, Tea Tree, Eucalyptus, Lemongrass, Orange, and Peppermint.
Step 2: Check Your Essential Oil Diffuser
While using essential oil in baby massages for aromatherapy is recommended by some, we recommend using the safer alternative: an essential oil diffuser. After all, it may be troublesome if they start touching the essential oil on their body and it gets into their nose or eyes. But having said that, diffusers make sure every bit of essential oil is added to the air, so we also recommend only using it with babies that are at least 1 month old (and can start to enjoy the benefits).
So when selecting an essential oils diffusers, know that they are not all made equal. Some are larger and longer lasting, some are smaller and more portable. Some have unique features, while others may simply look better. Cost is also something to consider. But while it’s not easy deciding which essential oil diffuser is the “best” or “safest” for your baby, here are some key features to pay attention to:
Noise: For minimal noise that won’t disturb you or your baby’s rest, we recommend ultrasonic diffusers.
Safety: Make sure your diffuser includes an auto-shutoff feature when the water inside has run out.
LED Light: While less for your baby and more for you, an LED light will help you see the device in the dark, so you don’t trip over it at night.
Step 3: Check Your Essential Oil Dilution Ratio
Proper dilution is very important, and not just for babies. Even adults need to watch the amount of essential oil they add, but a baby’s body is much smaller, so naturally the amount used should also be smaller. Unfortunately, there’s no clear rule for how much to use (and it also depends on age), so simply start small. 1 drop is usually enough in a 300mL diffuser for a 1-month old baby.
And now you know how to safely use aromatherapy for babies!
