Healthier Hair with Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a wonderful natural way to make your hair and skin soft, radiant, and healthy. Because it is comprised mainly of smaller medium-chain fatty acids, the oil of the coconut penetrates hair more deeply and faster than other conditioners. According to a study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science, coconut oil outperforms sunflower oil and mineral oil and is the only oil that reduces protein loss. It can help grow hair, longer and thicker. The essential nutrients including the lauric acid, penetrates the hair shaft improving the overall health of the hair.


When using coconut oil on your hair, make sure not to use too much; focus the oil on the middle section and bottom of your hair. Warm up the 1/2 teaspoon of coconut oil by using a warm bowl or heat on stove at very low heat. Pour the coconut oil around the top of your head, evenly distributing it on your hair. Avoid the scalp and roots of the hair. Use your finger to massage and smooth it down your hair. You can use a comb to help distribute the oil evenly. You can add a few drops of essential oil to the mix for added benefit and aroma (sandalwood or rose essential oils are good choices). Pile your hair and Cover with a shower cap, and leave on for 1-2 hours, or overnight. Wash with a gentle shampoo, and style as normal.


Combat Dandruff

People have used coconut oil for skin for hundreds of years to fight dandruff. At the end of the day or shortly before bedtime, wash your hair with an all-natural shampoo and condition as usual. Melt a teaspoon of coconut oil by using a warm bowl or heat on stove at very low heat. Gently comb your hair and remove any tangles. Use your finger to gently massage the coconut oil into your scalp. You can add a few drops of essential oil (lavender, wintergreen, thyme, and tea tree are good choices here). Massage thoroughly for 5 minutes. Cover with a shower cap, and if possible sit in the sun for 20-30 minutes to increase the heat, or simply use a hair dryer on a low setting to heat the cap. Remove cap, and wash with a gentle, natural shampoo. Repeat this 2 to 3 times per week.



Coconut oil can help long and curly hair. Melt a teaspoon of coconut oil by using a warm bowl or heat on stove at very low heat. Use your fingers to massage the oil gently into the ends of your hair, then starting from the ends and working your way toward the roots gently work out tangles with a comb or hair pick. Let the oil soak in, then brush and style as usual. Wash it off with shampoo or leave the coconut oil to continue to nourish your hair.
